Week 3 Discussion: Practicum Project Goals, Objectives, and Justification
Discussion Topic / Instructions
A project without a critical path is like a ship without a rudder. — Daniel B. Meyer, Illinois Construction Law
In Week 2, you collaborated with your practicum Faculty Member and Preceptor to identify a focus for your Practicum Project. This week, you begin to develop a Practicum Project Plan (PPP), which includes your overarching goal for the project and measurable objectives.
To Prepare:

Review the focus of your proposed Practicum Project as discussed in Week 2.
Review the Practicum Project Plan (PPP) Overview document provided in the Week 2 or Week 3 Learning Resources.
Consider how to translate your project focus into a clear overarching goal and specific, measurable objectives.
Reflect on scholarly literature, professional standards (e.g., AONL Nurse Leader Competencies), and regulatory guidelines that support and justify your project.
Think about how your project addresses leadership, management, and/or contemporary healthcare issues while promoting positive social change.

By Day 3
Post a description of the overarching goal for your Practicum Project and 2–4 measurable objectives (use SMART criteria where possible). Provide a brief rationale/justification for your selected goal and objectives that incorporates references from the literature, specialization standards, regulatory standards, and/or other scholarly sources. Explain how these goals and objectives align with your approved PPEP professional development objectives and course outcomes. Support your post with at least two to three scholarly references (in APA format). Do not identify any organizations or individuals by name.
By Day 6
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days. Offer constructive feedback on their proposed goals and objectives. Suggest additional literature, standards, or refinements that could strengthen the project plan. Share relevant insights from your own practicum experiences, leadership theories, or management concepts. Ask probing questions to help refine the plan further.
Submission Guidelines (Standard Walden Format):

For your initial post, begin with: Main Question Post
For responses to colleagues, begin with: Response
Initial posts are due by Day 3 (typically Wednesday by 10:59 p.m. Central Time).
Responses are due by Day 6 (typically Saturday by 10:59 p.m. Central Time).
Participate on at least three different days.
Posts must be substantive, demonstrate critical thinking, and integrate concepts from previous MSN courses (leadership theories, systems thinking, human resources, quality outcomes, finance, strategic planning).
Use APA 7th edition for citations and references.

Grading Considerations (Typical Rubric Elements):

Clarity and feasibility of the overarching goal and measurable objectives.
Strength of the rationale and integration of scholarly evidence/standards.
Alignment with PPEP, course outcomes, nurse executive competencies, and contemporary issues.
Quality and engagement of colleague responses (thoughtful suggestions and synthesis).

Tips for Success in Week 3 Discussion:

This discussion directly supports refinement of your Week 2 Practicum Project Plan Proposal and prepares you for ongoing project implementation.
Ensure objectives are realistic within the remaining practicum hours and course timeline.
Link your project explicitly to leadership/management application and a contemporary healthcare challenge (e.g., retention, quality metrics, interprofessional collaboration, or resource stewardship).
Maintain strict confidentiality — avoid any identifiable details about your site, preceptor, or staff.
Continue logging practicum hours in Meditrek and use insights from early immersion in your Week 3 Journal Assignment 1.

Note: Exact wording, the number of required objectives, or attached Learning Resources (e.g., the Practicum Project Plan Overview document) can vary slightly by instructor or term. Always check your Canvas classroom for the precise prompt, due dates, rubric, and any instructor-specific guidance or additional resources for your section of NURS 6600.
This Week 3 discussion shifts focus from broad project planning to developing a structured, justified plan with clear goals and objectives — a foundational step for the rest of the course.
