Purpose

This assignment is intended to help you learn to do the following:

· Evaluate academic writing genres and values.

· Analyze fundamentals of applied research.

Overview

In this course, you will develop your own “Writer’s Journal.” This is a place to keep notes, tools, and resources relevant to your own doctoral studies. You will have several assignments that indicate items you should add to your Writer’s Journal. However, you may also add anything that you find to be useful and want to maintain in one place. You will carry your Writer’s Journal from ENG8010 to ENG8020, where you will continue building on it. We recommend that you carry your Writer’s Journal throughout your entire degree as a living artifact that informs your work.

In this first entry, you will respond to these prompts:

· Reflect on your new role as a doctoral scholar. How will this role change your writing and research moving forward?

· What about the academic writing genre makes you comfortable or uncomfortable? What do you feel you may need more experience with?

· What essential resources and tools do you want to include in your journal for reference as you progress with your writing? Why are these important to you? Identify the resources and include them, or link to them, in your journal entry. For example, maybe you want to include links to APA sources or writing aids. Perhaps you want to include notes on important research methods or terminology.
