The second paragraph of the United States Declaration of Independence starts "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." In some states, like New Jersey, immediately after the revolution, women and free blacks could vote. This right was gradually restricted and by 1807 New Jersey’s new state constitution limited suffrage to white men. Many other colonial states followed suit and soon African Americans and women were denied the right to vote regardless of their education or property. What prompted these rights being removed and restricted in the years immediately following the American Revolution?
