Week 7 Discussion Debrief

The Discussion Boards that accompany each module will contribute toward your attendance and participation grade in this course. You will get up to 2 points for posting a comment that addresses the weekly discussion prompt (NOTE: you must post your comment in the first week of the discussion to be eligible for the full 2 points – you may get partial credit if posted in week 2 of the discussion). You will be eligible for 1 point for each additional comment posted to someone else’s post, up to a total of 5 points/discussion. The additional comments can be posted at any time during the two weeks that the Discussion Board is open

For this week’s discussion debrief, please address the following questions:

1.  In your opinion, what is the purpose of war? From what you have learned in this module or from your own personal experience, what do you think are the most important needs of service members who have served in combat situations and their families?

2. One of the videos talks about the increasing use of robots to conduct war. Do you think it is a good idea to kill people, many of whom may be civilians, who are thousands of miles away by operating weapons remotely, video-game style? What are the positives and negatives of this type of war?

3. Have you started your volunteer work yet? How’s it going so far?

4. We’re about halfway through the semester! Anything else you want to talk about?

response 1:

I think war is a way of using force to get our enemies to do our will and follow what we believe, but it can also fight injustices not only in other parts of the world but within a country as well. I think one of the most important issues to address is post-traumatic stress disorder, which affects many soldiers who’ve come back from war. Post-traumatic stress disorder can have serious consequences in the lives of veterans, not only affecting their mental health but their relationships as well. It is not talked about enough and help should be accessible to all veterans, regardless of financial status or insurance. I do not think robotic warfare would be a good idea because robots have no soul. I think civilian casualties and unnecessary death will spike with the use of robots. In general I do not trust robots to do things such as self-driving vehicles because there is no human instinct and while humans make mistakes, technology can go wrong as well. One positive of course would be that our own soldiers wouldn’t be killed or injured in battle because they aren’t on the front lines fighting, but I do not trust robots in war. I have started volunteering at the CARE House of Oakland County and have completed my trainings as child assist, which is a position in which I provide support to adolescents who come in to the center for forensic interviews regarding physical and sexual abuse. I really enjoy it so far and I think I do well in my role.

response 2:

In my opinion, the purpose of war is typically fought by a country or group of countries against an opposing country or group with the aim of achieving an objective through the use of force.  It is said to be eight main causes of war, but the number one cause is economic gain. Often wars are caused by one country’s wish to take control of another country’s wealth. The other causes are territorial gain, religion, nationalism, revenge, civil war, revolutionary war, and defensive war.  I believe therapy is the most important need of service members who have served in combat situations and their families. The department of defense provides a variety of counseling options to all active duty, National Guard and reserve service members, survivors, designated Department of Defense expeditionary civilians, and their families. I don’t think it is a good idea to kill by operating weapons remotely video game style. There are negatives and positives of this type of war. The negatives are will robot fighters be able to distinguish between enemy troops and innocent civilians, might robots be hacked by the enemy and turned against friendly troops, and if the robots break the rules of war who takes responsibility, etc. The only positive is robots will replace soldiers in dangerous missions such as crawling through caves or in street-to-street urban combat. I haven’t started my volunteer work because problems occurred, but I hope to start the upcoming week!
