Week 4 Assignment
Professional and Organizational Advocacy
Assignment Instructions
Assume you are a nurse practitioner who has joined an urban medical practice. One of the reasons you accepted this position is because your personal vision is to make a difference in the lives of families within your community. Your clinic provides medical care for underserved members of the population.

Your supervisor has asked you to consider joining a professional organization. Your population of focus is not limited by political or social boundaries, and you may be seeing patients of all ages, races, ethnicities, cultures, religious beliefs, and political affiliations. Strong local and national professional organizations are key to influencing national policy and regulation, as well as highlighting the effectiveness of the advanced practice nursing role.

Select and research a local and a national organization and discuss how their goals best support your community and their efforts to advocate for better health care among the population that you serve.

Create a presentation, describing the organization you have selected.

Choose the:

National Association of Hispanic Nurses

Address the following in your presentation:
• What is the name and purpose (mission, vision) of the organization?
• Year established? Pertinent history of the organization?
• How many members does the organization have?
• Is membership restricted and if it is, how and to whom?
• What are the fees for membership? Are there discounts?
• What benefits does the organization offer?
• Are there specific organizational accomplishments?
• What policy issues are of concern to the organization?
• What effect, if any, will joining this organization have on your practice as an APRN?

Cite references for all sources on a separate slide.
