RESEARCH PAPER ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
This assignment is a culminating exercise to expound on your knowledge and understanding of
the U.S. Intelligence Community and the National Security establishment. This assignment is
not meant to be exhaustive in nature, rather an encapsulation of the introductory level of
information you have studied and synthesized over the duration of the course. You may write on
any topic you choose. However, chosen topics must be appropriate to the course materials
presented and must be narrowed to provide a cogent, well-written, well-researched paper. You
must demonstrate a firm understanding of the topic area thru the presentation of an introduction,
main body and conclusion centered on a Thesis Statement. This paper serves to coalesce your
understanding of the U.S. Intelligence Community, the apparatuses & capabilities it uses, and the
National Security decision-making processes it supports.
Topics
Some students have difficulty selecting and narrowing an appropriate topic. The following are
merely suggested for consideration:
1) Examine the U.S. Intelligence Community’s role(s), responsibility, and activities in
confronting Chinese expansion? In countering Russian aggression? In responding to
Iranian provocations? In providing indications & warning of North Korean actions?
2) Examine the U.S. Intelligence Community’s role(s), responsibility, and activities in
providing indications & warnings of Afghan regression toward a terror sanctuary.
3) Develop and explain a theory of why the U.S. Intelligence Community recommended that
Iranian Qods Force Commander, General Qassem Soleimani, should be neutralized in
Baghdad, Iraq.
4) Analyze Open-Source Intelligence of General Soleimani’s Influence on the Iraqi Shia
Militia.
5) Analyze Open-Source Intelligence of General Soleimani’s greater role in countering U.S.
National Security Interests in the Mideast and Levant.
6) Analyze Open-Source Intelligence on the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Council (IRGC)
Qods Force’s role in International Terrorism.
7) Develop and explain a theory on the Future of the Islamic State, in the contexts of Abu
Bakr al-Baghdadi’s demise in Summer 2019 and U.S. extrication from the Mideast.
8) Explain the Christian Church’s role in supporting U.S. Intelligence Community efforts
outside the U.S.
9) Develop and explain the Christian Church’s role in supporting U.S. Intelligence
Community members to identify U.S. Citizens / U.S. Persons who are at risk for
radicalization.
10) Analyze the changing role(s) and structure of the U.S. Intelligence Community in the
21st Century.
