Introduction

Advocacy requires action. It is not enough to think about advocating for children or to want to advocate for children, you must DO it! This assignment will allow you to advocate for children by advocating for legislation to protect children and prevent childhood abuse and neglect. Your voice is important and you will write a letter to an elected official to advocate for legislation to protect children from abuse and neglect.

The assignment in this unit is to write a letter to a state elected official advocating for legislation to protect children from childhood abuse and neglect. You will use this resource to guide you in choosing an appropriate state or federal organization:

The second recommendation in this resource states, A priority effort should be undertaken to educate local, state and federal elected officials about the ACE Study and its implications for policies affecting children and families (Prevent Child Abuse America, 2020). You will use this recommendation to guide your advocacy letter as follows:

  1. Choose a state elected official to write your letter of advocacy using this resource: USAGov. (n.d.). How to contact your elected officials. 
  2. Use the  provided to write a letter advocating for support for legislation to prevent childhood abuse and neglect.
  3. Address the letter to the chosen state elected official using the template.
  4. Introduce yourself and why the topic of preventing abuse and neglect is important. Be sure to refer to the ACES study and provide a reference for the elected official. You want the official to read the ACES report and your letter may lead to a new awareness of the importance of preventing childhood trauma.
  5. The body of your letter should include an ACTION the elected official can take to prevent child abuse and neglect. For the sake of this assignment, use this . and find examples of state statutes that protect children from childhood trauma. Choose one of these examples and write about the importance of supporting this statute from the state level. Be sure to include three examples describing needed community support and resources for diverse families to prevent childhood trauma.
    1. End with a conclusion of why the action of this elected official is so important.
