the Ukraine crisis today

NEW YORK TIMES:  Analyzing current events historically.

to look over the articles for a few days until you notice an article that refers to a historical issue or that you can link to something we have talked about in class.  Look beyond the headlines to other sections, such as the opinion pieces.  Once you find an article that discusses a historical issue or that you can link to themes in the class, read the article and write a 1 page paper describing what is in the article and discussing how it ties in with an issue that we have discussed in class.

This article argues against Putin’s view that "Ukrainian statehood is a fiction" and that Ukrainian territory should be part of Russia.  Since some of your readings for this quiz are about the expansion of the Russian empire and we will be discussing issues related to this article, such as the growth of nationalism and the Russian Revolution, I thought you might find this article interesting.  It demonstrates how the issues we are talking about in this class are still relevant and that history can be used in political ways, even to justify military invasion.
