The purpose of this essay is to analyze a piece of literature in depth to demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which authors create complex characters through direct and indirect characterization.  Write an essay in which you analyze how an author uses their writing to reveal something more about a character and by extension the world around us.

Show how indirect characterization significantly influences a person’s interpretation of one character. Your thesis statement would tell us how F. Scott Fitzgerald wants us to view this character. Your evidence and analysis would show the way in which Fitzgerald guides our impression of the character throughout the book.
