This project consists of two parts.

The first part of the project asks that you identify a Marketing Communication, most commonly an advertisement or series of advertisements that you find particularly well done or particularly poorly done (we can learn from others blunders). 

An analysis of the effectiveness or lack thereof will be prepared in light of the concepts of effective marketing communications we have learned this quarter.  This analysis will be presented in the form of a bullet point outline and or Power Point presentation.  This outline should form the basis of your verbal in class presentation. 

Your presentation should begin with a viewing of the advertisement or promotion in question.  If the campaign has several different ads, one representative ad should be sufficient.

Some things that you may wish to consider in your presentation are:

  • What market is the message targeting, and is it effecting in doing so/ Is this an appropriate target for the product
  • How is the message attempting to position the product and is it effective in doing so?
  • What other marketing elements is the marketer using to communicate the attributes of the product? Is the marketing mix appropriate?
  • Does the message contribute to the products Brand Value? If so, how?  If not how might it do so?
  • What are the principal motivators for the selection of the product and how does the message attempt to appeal to those motivators? Is the message effective?
  • What is the message source and the sources attributes? Is the source and source attributes appropriate for the message being delivered?
  • What are the message channels and are they effective for the message being delivered?
  • What are the message attributes and are they effective for the message being delivered?
  • What do you think the communication objectives of the message are? Is the message meeting those objectives?
  • Do you think the message is “creative”? What creative strategy and tactics did the message employ?  Were these tactics appropriate for the product and target audience?  If so, why? If not, how could the message be improved?
  • Is there a "Big Idea" contained in the ad.  If so, what is the Big Idea. If not, could a Big Idea have been incorporated in the ad.
  • What is the advertising appeal used in the ad?  Is the appeal appropriate to the product and the target audience?
  • What is the creative execution style used in the ad? Is the creative execution appropriate to the product and target audience.
  • Are there any negative ethical or social cultural issues created by the ad?
