An op-ed is an article (used to be in a newspaper, now more frequently on a newspaper’s website) that expresses the opinion of a named writer who may or may not be affiliated with the newspaper or website.

For this assignment, you should write an essay approximately 3 double-spaced pages (12 point Times New Roman font) that expresses your current opinion and reasoning on the topic youve chosen to discuss this semester.

There is no outside research required for this essay; that will come later. You may include research if you want, but be sure to give credit to your source. I’m not concerned yet with formal citation in MLA or APA format, and you don’t need a separate references page. For this assignment, if you cite an outside source, just work it into the sentence, like this: 

“According to the CDC, the best way to prevent the spread of Covid is regular masking and testing.” [or something like that; just be sure you’re crediting your sources in some clear way. We’ll focus on formal academic citation later]

Use the best argumentative strategies you have at this point. Some things you may want to consider:

Appeals to ethics, emotion, and logic (ethos, pathos, logos)
Clarity: work to make your points clear.
Support: support could come in the form of facts, examples, critical reasoning, and personal experience.

Remember that everything in your essay should be working to support your main point. Trim the fat.

Allow your own voice to be heard; good writing sounds like its coming from a human.
