In the United States, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been the subject of a huge amount of criticism, but so far, its the best weve got. How could we do better?

With respect for and consideration of the constraints posed by social, political, and economic realities, how do you think the US health care system should be transformed?

Using an explanation and assessment of the ACA, an assessment of the US health care system with respect to measures of health care systems, and a summary and assessment of another countrys health care system, develop your dream health care system. While this is an exercise in imagination only, it must be constructed with clear and evident awareness of the constraints demanded by current realities.

Be sure to address each of these steps:

1. What does the ACA do? Use pp. 176-178 in Weitz to describe how it works.
2. Carefully evaluate the ACA: Where does it succeed? Who, and how, does it really help? Where can it be improved?
3. Assess the US health care system with respect to universal coverage, portability, geographic accessibility, comprehensive benefits, affordability, financial efficiency, and consumer choice.
4. Out of Germany, Canada, and Great Britain, which system would you choose as a model for the U.S. health care system, and why? Summarize your chosen country’s system, explain why this is the best of the three options, and explain its weaknesses.
5. Now tie together everything youve just done. Using your careful assessment of the pluses and minuses of the ACA, an evaluation of the US health care system with respect to the above specified measures, the inspirations and cautions you take from another countrys health care system, AND YOUR IMAGINATION, propose a new and improved health care system for the U.S.
