For this assignment, you will have the opportunity to apply the concepts and readings we discuss in this course to current events or issues.  You will pick one written news article from 2022 that deals with the kinds of issues around inequality that we discuss in the first half of the semester. 

Your application paper will consist of three sections:

1.  A brief summary of the article: This section should be briefàyou should be able to convey the main points of the article in 1-2 paragraphs, which is around ½ page.

2.  An application of course material: This section is the substantive body of the paper.  Your key task for this section (and the paper) is to apply and connect relevant course material to the article you have selected.  Essentially, your paper will discuss how the course material (meaning the ideas and concepts we discuss in class) facilitates your understanding of the article and/or how the article helps you to better understand coursematerial.  You will need to cite at least 3 authors from our class readings. You must UNDERLINE the authors thatyou use.

3.  A discussion of the sociological significance of the issue: In this section, you must describe and explain why your chosen article (or the topic the article focuses on) is relevant and important to sociology. In this section you can also: connect the article to your own experience and/or discuss what you found most interesting or compelling about this article and/or topic. Whatever you decide to do in this space, be sure to substantiate your thoughts within the larger context of sociology.

4. Format: Your paper should be approximately 5 pages in length, not including the reference page and title page.  You may pick any referencing style (APA, MLA), as long as you are consistently using the same style. You are free towrite in the first person or third person.  Your reference list should include a full reference for the article(s) and any other sources you used, as well as for the class materialsyou drew upon.
