You are to write a short play or scene of at least two typewritten pages. It can be on any subject you would like, as long as it is not rated “R” or above.
When writing your scene, there’s a couple things to keep in mind
- It should contain at minimum two characters
- Should be a completed story – has a beginning, middle and end
- Should have a conflict with a resolution
- It does not need to be overly complex. Remember, theatre sometimes mimics real life
- It can be any type of drama you want – comedy, tragedy, melodrama, etc.
- Start out with the basics
- What is the setting? – recommend to stay with one location as this is a play and not a movie
- Identify your characters
- What is the conflict?
- Decide on the resolution
- Once you have the basics, expand with dialogue
- Watch your format
- Character names are typically in all CAPS
- Dialogue is in a normal font
- (Stage directions are typically italicized)
