Content Guidelines
This paper is meant to be an analysis and evaluation of the specific compositional and movement
elements employed in this production. Please use this general outline to frame your specific,
detailed thoughts:
Movement Analysis. Provide a thorough movement analysis of three different dances, or
movement sequences from the show. Consider the Elements of Movement (BASTE) and which
elements are relevant for either piece. Describe these areas in detail with specific examples to
illustrate and/or support your claims. Think of painting a picture of the dance with your
narrative description, as if you were describing the dance to someone who has not seen the show.
You do not need to cover all 5 elements in your analysis.
Modernism/Dance as Innovation. Consider what we have discussed about modernism in
dance and the idea of crafting or generating movement to meet the choreographic vision, rather
than upholding established dance vocabulary or classical structures. How does this production
follow in this tradition (or not) through innovation, reinvention, rebellion against classical forms
or fusion of different art forms? Are there dances in the show that uphold classical or traditional
choreographic structures? Consider relating your observations to your analysis of modern dance
from earlier in the semester. Provide specific examples to illustrate or support your claims.
Personal Reflection. As part of your overall evaluation and conclusion, express how you were
personally impacted by this production. Provide an evaluation of how successful this production
was in bringing a story to life, creating an interesting image or atmosphere, introducing you to
new dance vocabulary, engaging your spirit or mind, or helping you to consider something in a
new way. Was there a particular performer or design element that captured your attention? Share
other personal reflections that feel relevant to your viewing of this production, including any
associations to our work in class, and provide vivid examples to illustrate your reflections.
Evaluation
You will receive a letter grade for your paper based on how thoroughly you have addressed the
topics above and supported or illustrated your detailed observations with specific examples.
Consideration will also be given to the overall structure of your analysis as well as grammar.
