Racial Identity: African American/Puerto Rican, residence: new jersey, PWI, majority-white intermediary/high schools
Directions
Do you have a racial and/or ethnic identity? An immigrant identity? Or perhaps you have some knowledge, extensive or not, of family background and the route ancestors traveled to the U.S.A.. Consider these questions–one of the or all of them—when drafting this paper.
This is essay is an autobiographical piece that will relay the narrative of your own life and may include the story of your family and extended family. In addition to providing narrative, the paper should offer historical and sociological analysis of the story. Feel free to write in the first-person voice and draw from any personal experiences that you have had or that are a part of your family’s story.
Perhaps race, ethnicity, and immigrant experience were not especially significant factors in your life while growing up. In this case, use the essay to address how this came to be. Or perhaps dig into your family’s immigrant history and settlement in the United States if that is applicable.
There are multiple ways in which to compose the narrative. You could call up parents or relatives and ask them a few questions to conduct a mini-interview. The paper could also speak to where you grew up and discuss the parameters of race and ethnicity in that place. Feel free to address other lines of division, which are often in effect, such as social class division/inequality.
For example, I grew up in a town where to cross a street called Commerce Street heading west immediately revealed a heavily poor and working-class Mexican neighborhood often referred to as the barrio. Residents, who lived west of Commerce, frequently contended that their neighborhoods were neglected by a predominantly white city council and a long history of white politicians holding considerable power over a city that is currently 72% Latinx. In this case, race, ethnicity, social class, and space intertwined to produce an experience of marginalization for the western, overwhelmingly Mexican side of the city.
