Purpose
This assignment gives you the opportunity to write like a sociologist who uses qualitative data. Recall from the first unit of this course that qualitative data focuses on observations of people’s lives, what they say, and how they act. It does not preclude you from counting things, but the emphasis is certainly not on statistics. Take some time to skim back through the Towers for each week, reminding yourself about how the story developed and reviewing the contrasts and similarities that appeared between social classes.
Instructions
Then, write a 2-3 page (double-spaced, 1” margins) statement that focuses on income and wealth inequality in WTs. If WTs were real, what percentage of the national wealth and income would each class/apartment have? Who would fall into poverty? What affect do you think these wealth and income inequalities have had on their lives? (For instance, what material hardships are you seeing or not seeing in each apartment?) What do you project for their outcomes based on what we have learned so far? After answering those questions, choose a theme to illustrate these concepts.
Abbreviated Example Essay
Other examples of themes that could be used are: access to tech (what type of entertainment and communication devices does each class/apartment have, and what does that demonstrate about their income and wealth situations?); access to leisure and entertainment remember the baseball games, etc.); access to healthcare, etc.
Requirements
Citing sources is required. You need not include a reference page, but you do need in-text citations.
Remember your best skills in writing, with paragraphs that open with thesis statements and are supported subsequently by supporting evidence and argument, and with a structure where the paragraphs together make your case. (This sounds repetitive, I know, but even advanced college students forget these things sometimes.)
