Public Service Motivation

Public service motivation (PSM) was about what motivates individuals to participate in public works. PSM framework argues that there are intrinsic attributes of individuals that finds public works more attractive. Based on the theoretical arguments, those who are high in PSM (i.e. who are high in some or all dimensions of PSM) are more likely to choose careers in public sector.  They are also more satisfied with their jobs and are better performers at work in public sector.

As with any other theories, PSM was also criticized for its weaknesses. In your own view, what is missing in PSM framework? What could be other factors that motivates people towards public service? If you have real-life experiences or examples, please feel free to share them.

To what extent is this government intervention ethical?

Be specific in the how governments may or may not intervene with the private lives of public officials, and how such interventions may or may not affect the public service delivery or the culture of the public organization. You may think about it based on a specific field or organization in the public sector or in a more general perspective.
