Childhood Vaccinations

The issue of childhood vaccination has come to the forefront due to the rise of the anti-vaccination movement. There has been an increase in vaccine preventable diseases in many states that have lax compulsory immunization laws. In particular, California recently was recently faced with the largest outbreak of pertussis in fifty years. The pertussis outbreak along with measles outbreaks in California has garnered a lot of media attention. The issue has reached the governmental and decision agenda level in many states. The bill SB277 in California is currently proposed as way to create stricter immunization laws by removing religious and philosophical exemptions for vaccinations. There are many studies showing the increased risks of illness for unvaccinated children and people in the communities with low vaccination rates.

For the Final Memo I will examine the pending SB277 legislation in California and look at how SB277 would change the current laws. I am also going to compare SB277 to the programs that other states have and use these states to find various alternatives. I am going to use studies that show the efficacy and safety of vaccination. I am also going to consult papers that detail the history of vaccination use and compulsory immunization. Reading papers that detail the history and effects of the anti-vaccination movement may also be useful. These will all help me to discover the current nature of the problem and make an informed decision on what the best alternative is for California.
