1. Briefly describe the nature of your interprofessional experience project and how you worked with people in your group. Identify the types of people you worked with by providing their background and/or job titles.

In this project, the scenario presented to the group was based on a case study in Tajikistan, noted as one of the poorest countries in Central America. Due to the fall from the Soviet Union, Tajikistan experienced an economic turmoil leading to poor healthcare, loss of funding, and loss of basic services such as sewage and water. These issues along with the lack of healthcare supplies and facilities resulted in an increase in typhoid fever cases. Working with the members of the group, we each developed a problem statement based on the scenario, combined our professional experiences and backgrounds, and developed a plan using the suggestions of each member, collectively. These efforts were accomplished through active discussions between members and by combining our ideas, professions, and experiences. Each member was able to contribute equally to the overall plan and we worked together to balance the values and expectations of each profession.

The members of the group provided numerous skills, knowledge and talents that were used to establish a relationship between each group member. The first member was a Public Health Research Analyst with other professional experiences being in the medical field and customer service. The second member worked as a lab assistant and data collector with a background in biology, food services and customer service. The third member was a clinical nurse serving in the military with a background in public health. Lastly, my profession is as an Operations Specialist in the military with a background in customer service and the medical field. This step encompasses the first competency of IPEC that states, Work with individuals of other professions to maintain a climate of mutual respect and shared values.1 Overall, the values that were demonstrated in this project included military values such as honor, respect, and devotion to duty, as well as taking care and assisting the customer or individual first. Throughout the entirety of this project, each member treated one another with respect and honored each professional skill regardless of its nature, expertise, or type.

2. What were the goals of your overall interprofessional experience project and how did your work, as a professional, contribute to reaching the goals or objectives? How were the 4 main competencies listed in the document, Core Competencies for Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: 2016 update implemented?

The main goal of this project was to develop a plan of action to reduce the spread and outbreak of typhoid fever cases in Tajikistan by improving environmental factors such as water, sewage and food, and by administering a vaccine. Another primary goal included incorporating different professional experiences and background to collaboratively develop, research, and analyze a public health issue as team. My work as a military professional contributed to assisting with communications between organizations, and by providing assistance for medical, food and other supplies. My professional background provided skills that were not reflected in other professions presented such as communications and emergency management expertise.

The first core competency focuses on the values and ethics for interprofessional practice. This was implemented by introducing and establishing relationships among group members. Each member stated their profession and professional experiences to help members better understand the values and expectations of each profession. The second competency focuses on the roles and responsibilities of each profession. This was implemented by assigning roles based on description and professional discipline of each profession. For example, two members possessed a background in the military, therefore their professions were utilized to provide communications, relief, and first aid.

The third competency focuses on interprofessional communication. This step was implemented through open, responsive discussion among group members and by working together as a group to achieve a common goal. The fourth competency encompasses teams and teamwork. The project as a whole required each member to work together to plan, deliver and evaluate a public health problem. Each group member equally contributed by discussing and responding to questions to create and develop a plan. The end result included the ideas and experiences from all members.

3. How did the development of relationships between the students in your group, from various backgrounds, facilitate the development of a public health plan? What shared values helped you to accomplish the plan of action?

The group demonstrated many different skills and professions that helped to shape the final plan. Each profession was included and utilized based on the unique skills and knowledge each presented. For example, two members had a background in the military and using this diverse skill allowed for effective planning on a population level based on the values of each military member and their organization. Each member also came from a background in the medical or health field which greatly contributed to the care of residents in Tajikistan on an individual level. Given the diverse background of each member, the group was able to collaborate effectively and use each skill equally to achieve a common goal. As a group member, understanding each members profession and background was beneficial to developing a plan of action by using each skill and talent that each member possessed.

Using the core values of my military organization as well as the values represented by each members profession from clinical research, data collection, customer service, and nursing helped to form effective, reasonable goals. The groups main concern was to protect the residents of Tajikistan by preventing the spread of disease and providing vaccinations to improve the health and reduce the number of cases.

4. Compare/contrast how you as an individual professional might have approached the public health problem as opposed to approaching it in an interprofessional manner? How does/will the interprofessional nature of the approach affect the implementation of public health plan?

As an individual player, I would have approached the scenario by using the values and skills of my profession to include my military experiences and other skills as needed. For example, the military would have me think on a population level by protecting the safety of all residents first. This would need to be accomplished by establishing an emergency plan, setting up communications to talk to other agencies and organizations, and implementing decontamination zones to prevent the spread of disease. As an individual professional, it may be difficult to see other perspectives and use other professions for various skills. An interprofessional nature would allow a plan to be implemented using a variety of resources as compared to an individual approach that may only present a few resources relevant to a single profession. A plan has multiple steps that typically involve multiple players.

Taking a look at the theoretical frameworks and models represented throughout this course, each one had a different approach but required multiple key players in order to be successful. It would be ineffective to have plan with no resources or assistance, which is why using an interprofessional approach would be useful to provide experience on all levels. The teamwork and consolidated effort represented in this project allowed me to understand and learn about different professions and the skills that they can bring to the table.
