You must write on this argument. Remember, I choose the arguments that you analyze. Don’t create your own arguments. Once again, treat this as though it is a take home exam. Impress me with your knowledge. Please evaluate the following argument:

No arguments with mood and figure OAO-4 are sound

No arguments with mood and figure AIE-2 are arguments with mood and figure OAO-4

Some arguments with true premises and a true conclusion are not sound

Some arguments with true premises and a true conclusion are arguments with mood and figure AIE-2

THIS IS THE INTERMEDIATE CONCLUSION: Some arguments with mood and figure OAO-4 are arguments with true premises and a true conclusion

(YOU MUST USE THE INTERMEDIATE CONCLUSION)

Please put this sorites in standard logical form.  Provide the mood and figure for both syllogisms. Is this argument valid? Is it sound? Define the term sorites and ‘enthymeme’.  Explain why each premise and the conclusion of the argument is true. (Explain why the intermediate conclusion is also true). PLEASE PROVE THAT BOTH SYLLOGISMS OF THE SORITES ARE INVALID BY COUNTER EXAMPLES. Prove that OAO-4 is invalid (and thus, unsound) by a counterexample. You will NOT be given credit for Venn diagrams or Salmon’s rules–this is a counterexample paper. Why might we be tempted to think that this argument is sound?

Presenting arguments

What not to do: never present an argument in your paper like this: the first premise is ‘All M are P’, the second is ‘All S are M’, and the conclusion is ‘All S are P’. If you do this, I have the option of docking 5 points for every argument that you treat in this manner. This is not an English essay.

What to do: present the argument like this:

All M are P

All S are M

All S are P
