For this assignment, collect advertisements or public service messages from various magazines or online marketing advertisements—pay special attention to those that seem very persuasive or very unpersuasive. Drawing on your knowledge of persuasion tactics, identify the features of these ads that you believe either maximize or detract from their persuasive impact. (For example, look at such factors as source credibility and attractiveness, the use of vivid information, one- versus two-sided arguments, the use of fear, and other variables discussed in Chapter 5.) Toward what kinds of people are the different ads directed? Can you find examples of ads that might succeed with one kind of audience but might totally backfire with another kind of audience? Why do you think advertisers would risk alienating some audience members rather than presenting a message with universal (or near-universal) appeal?
Write a short paper about your observations and interpretations. Be sure to tie your ideas to concepts in the textbook and utilize additional academic references. This assignment must be two – four-page paper (double spaced, 12pt sized font, Times New Roman; your name and assignment number should go in the header of the paper) on this answering both questions.
