Purpose
The purpose of the first paper is to learn:
1) the current level of policy engagement in their field agency and
2) identify one policy that has an impact on the agency and the clients that receive services from the agency.
Students should first talk to colleagues, field instructors, managers and/or clients in order to make an assessment regarding the current level of policy engagement by the agency. Following these conversations, students should select a current policy area for investigation. Once a policy area is selected, students should then become knowledgeable about it by referencing academic, government, or other sources in the policy community. Students are strongly encouraged to select a policy that can be influenced at the State level – confirm with your instructor if you are unsure.
The first paper must:
1. Briefly describe the type of service provided at your field agency and the population(s) served.
2. Identify the chosen policy and provide a thorough description of the history and purpose of the policy
3. Describe what was learned about the policy environment at your field agency.

Description of social problem shows in-depth understanding. Provides examples to demonstrate understanding. Uses classroom lectures and readings for support.

Description of implementation shows a high level of understanding of the policy and the implementation process with clear communication skills.

Writing & use of APA
The paper is clean and clear. The student is able to communicate their thoughts and ideas at a high level of competence. Student uses correct APA 7th edition format including but not limited to: title page, headers, page numbers, introduction, summary, citations, and references.
