Oral cancer, also known as squamous cell carcinoma, usually forms when the cells related to the mouth and inside the mouth start to transform and mutate. Risk factors include: tobacco use of any kind, alcohol use, weakened immune system, etc… The majority of head and neck cancers that start in or around the mouth and the back of the throat are related to oral cancer. This type of cancer affects 50,000 Americans annually and, if left untreated, can be fatal. It is proven that it is three times more likely to develop in men than women and there are about 145,000 annual deaths worldwide.
