Interview with a MSN NP
Questions
The following questions are a guide. You may ad lib as necessary; however, be cognizant of the NPs time. Keep the interview to 3045 minutes maximum unless otherwise specified by the NP you are interviewing.
- Personal history
- What is your education and preparation as an NP?
- How did you find your present job?
- What did you do to market yourself?
- Current practice
- What is your job description?
- How did you negotiate salary and benefits?
- Describe your typical day. Who are your typical patients? What is your average number of patients daily?
- Setting
- How do you fit into the organizational structure?
- How are you evaluated?
- Describe how you function using the NP core competencies.
- How do you incorporate direct care, consultation, collaboration, research, and teaching?
- Describe how you use conflict management.
- Describe how you use cultural competency within your practice.
- What are your biggest challenges?
- What issues do you confront in your current practice?
- What legal and ethical issues do you confront?
- How do you stay current on professional issues?
- How has your role been affected by current healthcare changes and recommendations such as state practice regulations, federal payor changes, increase in specialty certifications for NPs?
Documentation
Include the name of the NP you interviewed with his or her contact information, title, type of practice, and the date of the interview. Submit a two- to three-page synopsis of the interview, including a description of the take-aways you have, in a Microsoft Word document with professional APA formatting (see APA 7th Ed., p. 50).
