One of the prominent themes in this class is that Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPoC) have a long history contending, challenging, and resisting systems of settler colonialism, white supremacy, and heteropatriarchy. We use a variety of disciplinary approaches (history, ethnic studies) and texts (social science articles, documentaries, podcasts) to evaluate the history and contemporary experiences of Indigenous, Black and Latina/o/x communities. In this class we also address how these systems shape individual life chances, daily interactions, and struggles for equity, specifically in areas of health, families, education, and the environment.

The texts all introduce you to the prominent histories, important terms, historic events & policies that Indigenous peoples have encountered in the lands we now know as United States, Canada, and Mexico. The texts also introduce us to the contemporary challenges and strategies of resistance that many Indigenous communities experience.

For your discussion post please

• explain two challenges that Indigenous communities are currently facing and please explain the possible historic origins of those challenges (based on the readings)
• explain two different types of responses that Indigenous communities are undertaking toward those challenges.
• discussion post should specifically describe 2 challenges and 2 responses from Indigenous peoples to these challenges
