In response to the objection that utilitarianism reduces people to the level of pigs, Mill argues that there are qualitative distinctions in pleasures. Explain and critically assess Mill’s argument. Be sure to do all of the following: explain the basic structure of utilitarianism (including how utility relates to pleasure or happiness); explain the “swine objection”; explain how Mill introduces qualitative distinctions among pleasures in order to respond to this objection; consider a potential objection to Mill’s response; consider how Mill might respond to this objection.
