It must be emphasized that this piece of writing is not a homework assignment. Rather, it is one piece of the formal writing you will produce in fulfillment of the requirements for this course. It also serves as your midterm examination. As such, you should take your time working on this assignment. You will want to outline your writing, visit the Learning Center, proofread, and revise before uploading your finished product here. 

Aim for a total of 500-750 words.

1. Explain the differences between first-, second-, and third-person narration. Give an example of each from the readings we have looked at this semester.

2. What is the difference between denotation and connotation? Be specific. Find examples from the stories we have read to illustrate the difference.

3. What are flat and round characters? Explain. Give an example of each type of character from our readings this semester and explain what makes them flat or round.

4. What is symbolism? Identify one example of symbolism from a story we have read this semester and explain how the author uses symbolism to create meaning.
