For this blog, I am looking for those reflective skills. It has been awhile since we have purposely thought back on our experiences. The videos and reading for this week offer you a very foundational approach to understanding these terms. Microaggressions come from all over, not just race, and you may have been on the receiving end of these aggressions in your lifetime. Maybe, you realize now, that you were the one unknowingly sending these out into the world, it happens. All we can do as people is be better every day.
Part 1: I would like you to share a story from your education’s past. Think of an experience where you felt these attacks. How did it make you feel. What emotions did you have when it was happening? How did you feel after? What would that person (people) need to recognize to fix these from happening?
Part 2: As a teacher, imagine a student came up to you and described the situation from part 1. How would you take action? What would you do with your power and privilege (like I described that I had to learn how to advocate for trans students, and eventually was able to speak to my whole district about how we can respect, love, and cherish students in our classroom spaces.) (If you get a chance, google Texas Trans Law and read up on the things happening in Texas TODAY.)
Part 3: What is 1 takeaway you have from the Thursday prereading article? What is your 1 AHA! moment (lightbulb moment)
