Listening Paper 

 Directions: For this paper, you are assigned to watch either a live streaming or recorded speech or talk.  Use the following numbered items in order to complete this assignment.  Your paper is to be typed, double-spaced, and twelve point font.  Your paper should be 2 pages total.  You should NOT simply answer the questions with a yes or no response.  I expect you to provide a thorough explanation and justification for each answer citing specific examples from the speech itself. 

Here are the questions you should answer in you paper:

1.  Identify and explain your internal and external listening interferences. Then, establish a clear strategic listening goal for this listening situation.

2. What is the central idea of the speech? What is the speakers point of view?  Is it appropriate for the audience and occasion?  Did you find the speaker credible?  Why or why not?

3.  What type of organizational pattern does the speaker seem to use? Identify the main ideas.  Is the pattern of main ideas appropriate for the purpose, occasion, and audience?  Justify your answer.  Is there an introduction, body, and conclusion?  How can you tell?

4.  What style of delivery did the speaker use? Did the speakers verbal and nonverbal delivery enhance the ideas or detract from the content of the speech?  Explain your answer.

5.  What 3 open-ended questions did you ask the speaker or you would have liked to ask the speaker?

6.  How would you rate this speaker overall? Is there anything this speaker did or said that you would like to incorporate into your own speaking?  Was there anything the speaker did that detracted from the message?
