General WritingGuidelines:

  • As a general rule, do not write in the first person and avoid using we or you language (e.g., Now that we understand this concept, you will).
  • Do not use contractions.
  • Periods and commas are placed before quotation marks except when a parenthetic citation ends a sentence.
  • Question marks, colons, and semi-colons are generally placed outside of quotation marks.
  • Quotation marks are double, as opposed to single, unless it is a quote inside of a quote.
  • Quotations that are 40 words or more in length appear in block form. No quotation marks are used in this instance.
  • Do not overuse quotes.
  • Avoid sentence fragments. Sentences must have a subject and a predicate.
  • Do not use excessive normative language (e.g., words such as must, should, required, and necessary).
  • Avoid the use of exaggerated language unless it is absolutely necessary (e.g., words such as very, extremely, and huge).
  • When writing, be parsimonious. That is, avoid using unnecessary words in your description/critique.
  • Avoid colloquial language (e.g., phrases such as the cards are on the table, sticks out in my mind, fits like a glove).
  • Note that inanimate objects and/or abstract concepts do not speak. For example, do not make statements such as the data say or the government thinks.
