For this mid-term project, you will be interviewing a family member, a close friend, a significant other, or an important mentor/role model in your life about your own communication skills.

Please organize a time to meet or chat virtually with your selected person and prepare your questions ahead of time. You will be asking this person to provide you with an honest evaluation of your verbal, nonverbal, perception, and listening skills. Please ask them about each one individually, and take the time to really hear their replies (and take notes)! Try to encourage them to provide specific examples of situations that they can remember when you exhibited these skills. Advise them to use rich details about what they find the most interesting or useful in your communication style. You may also want to explain the concept of the Johari window to the interviewee to help frame the conversation. You want to explore all of the boxes of the window with this person during the interview.

After you finish the interview, please write and submit a 4-5 page (double spaced) paper reflecting on this experience. Discuss the following ideas:

  • Advise of the details of the conversation – when and where did this take place? Who is the person you chose and why? How did the conversation make you feel?
  • What did your friend/family member say your strengths and weaknesses are in each of the four key areas (non-verbal communication, verbal communication, perception, and listening)?
  • Use the concept of the Johari Window to help frame your analysis of their responses; what are your open, blind, hidden, and unknown areas, and how did talking to a loved one help you dig deeper into these areas? What were some of the examples they shared? Are there any surprises or things you were really unaware of that came up during the interview?
