Introduction
Infant mortality is the death of an infant before his or her first birthday. The infant mortality rate is the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. In addition to giving us key information about maternal and infant health, the infant mortality rate is an important marker of the overall health of a society. In 2018, the infant mortality rate in the United States was 5.7 deaths per 1,000 live births (CDC, 2018). The infant mortality rate in the United States is relatively high for a developed nation. Although SIDS is still one of the leading causes of death in children under the age of 1 year, the number of deaths from SIDS has declined significantly over the past few decades.
Prompt
Discuss the differences in infant mortality rates between the United States and other developed countries, citing potential reasons for the high numbers. Also, describe the risk factors for SIDS, and explain how the “back-to-sleep” campaign has played a role in decreasing the number of SIDS deaths.
