One way to test your knowledge is to try to explain it to someone. If you cant verbally explain the idea, then you probably do not understand it sufficiently. Once you can put the information into your own words, you will deepen your understanding and strengthen your memory.

For this assignment, you will be explaining the characteristics of a hydrophilic substance. Imagine that the person you are explaining this to is not a biologist or a chemist. In fact, they have very little, if any, background in science. Since this is the case, you must break the information down into terms and examples that they will be able to understand.

For this explanation, keep in mind that you should address

  • What the term hydrophilic means
  • What the term hydrophobic means
  • Why certain substances are hydrophilic (i.e. what characteristics do they possess)
  • Why certain substances are hydrophobic (i.e. what characteristics do they possess)
  • What this means about how the substance will interact if placed in a beaker of water
  • cite at least 3 sources
