Project Two: Annotated Bibliography

Prompt:

In this project, youll begin by writing out a research question about a problem in your future field of interest (if you are undecided, just pick something you think youre interested in). After writing your research question, youll begin searching for, collecting, and reading sources to help you answer the research question. The goal of the annotated bibliography is to collect sources relating to your research question and to think through the ways these sources will be of use to you in your essay. The annotated bibliography is a tool to help you organize your sources and your thoughts about them. It helps you decide what argument you want to present in your essay. Remember that this is a working annotated bibliography; your sources can and probably should change as you start writing your essay. Your audience is an academic audience unfamiliar with your research topic. Each annotation should be between 200-250 words.

Requirements:

  • Provide your research question at the top of your paper.
  • Select 8 sources that explore a range of positions that people take on your topic.
  • At least 5 of your sources should come from peer-reviewed scholarly articles. In other words, your sources should not all be websites.

Format:

Begin by stating your topic and research question (include the revised version if you need to revise it from your proposal). Then arrange your sources in alphabetical order. Each source should include the following:

  • The Bibliographic Line: Cite your source in APA format as if it were appearing on a References page at the end of the essay.
  • Summary: Include the authors argument/main point and the main supporting points.
  • Evaluation: What makes this source credible? What makes the author qualified to write about this topic?
  • Analysis:
    • What are the sources strengths and weaknesses? (Remember to consider the sources rhetorical situation: what is this sources purpose and what are the strengths/weaknesses according to that purpose?)
    • Will this source be valuable for your project? Will it provide context for an issue? Will it provide evidence? Will you refute any points?
