Recommended Process:
Begin by identifying a concept you’d like to explore
Then, begin your research.
You can perform research of academic texts, or main stream media, or conduct interviews. In fact, I encourage a diverse research that explores multiple genres. Some of my favorite papers that explored the concept of love often used music and movies across genres and cultures to prove their point.
I’ve also enjoyed reading papers that included interviews of friends and family members to explore differences.
Once you have identified some texts to use as evidence, begin writing the body paragraphs first. This will help you explore the topic and explain evidence without having to prove a thesis yet.
Once your body paragraphs are done, look at your topic sentences, and write a thesis statement that summarizes your topic sentence.
Once your thesis is written, draft the intro and then the conclusion.
Your intro should build context by offering any definitions needed to understand your essay, and your conclusion should validate and lead out of the conversation.
