Examine the impact of the Industrial Revolution on imperialism. What are the links between industrialization and the spread of empire? Is industrialization key to the development of imperialism in the short 19th century, or an incidental factor?
Discuss the development of nationalism throughout the 19th century. How did the idea of nationalism spread and why do you think the idea was so popular? In what ways did nationalism help, and in what ways did it hinder, the stability of empires in the 19th century?
Examine the role that competition between states plays in the growth of empires. How important is it as a driving factor behind imperialism? Describe one specific example from the early modern period and one from the short nineteenth century that illustrate your argument.
