The essay is worth 30% of the final course grade.  Students independently complete a written essay on one pertinent informatics issue or topic that they are interested in exploring.  Topics are identified during the semester through topic discussions, course readings, or additional scholarly articles.  Students synthesize knowledge learned in this course and from previous university studies to develop their essay.  This essay assignment helps students to accomplish course learning outcomes 1 – 5.  The Essay is written in APA format and due at the end of the course (see Class Schedule).

Essay Guidelines:

1. Introduction (15 %)
   Introduce the topic of interest and give a concise, detailed definition and overview of the topic and its pertinence to healthcare.  Cite references to support your discussion of the topic. 
2. Significance (25 %)
   Detailed discussion and summary of the informatics topic and its impact on healthcare.  Significant factors and issues are included.  Discussion demonstrates knowledge of the topic and integrates learning from the textbook and scholarly literature.  Cite references to support your reflection, discussion, and critical assessment of the topic. 
3. Implications for Practice (30 %)
   Identify and discuss the evidence-based implications for practice related to the topic.  Discussion demonstrates insight into the importance of the informatics topic and its application in healthcare.  Include critical evidence-based implications that need to be addressed in practice.  Cite references to support discussion and assessment of the topic. 
   Conclusions (20 %)
   Summarize the key points of your topic discussion and findings in the conclusion paragraphs.  Summarize the impact of the informatics topic on healthcare. 
4. Format, grammar, writing style (10 %)
   APA format is used, including correct grammar and spelling.  Essay is logically organized with an introduction, discussion, and conclusions sections.  APA format headings are used appropriately throughout. HINT: Use the bold criteria section titles above as your APA section headings!
5. References
   Five (5) scholarly references are required, including the textbook chapter on the informatics topic.  Pertinent website resources can be in addition to the required references but should be kept to a minimum as websites may not be scholarly, evidence-based, or unbiased.
6. Essay length and submission
   4-5 pages is required, not including the title page or reference page.  An abstract page is not required.
   Essays not submitted by the due date will not be accepted, unless the student obtains faculty permission before the assignment due date.  Late assignments are subject to deduction of 10% each day.
