Answer the following questions as part of your discussion:
- This chapter spent quite a bit of space talking about the patriotism panic, or the idea that schools could be used as a place to indoctrinate youth into communist/socialist/radical ideology. What are some measures schools took to try to combat this? What are some ways that modern schools work to instill American ideology and beliefs into its students? (Think about things like the Pledge of Allegiance)
- What do you think about the notion of political censorship in schools? What are the consequences of censorship? [Hint: Removing books about the USSR on p. 96 of TW or removing teachers who refused to answer questions about their political affiliation under the guide that, such insubordinationwould teach children to question, instead of to heed, authority (Goldstein, 2014, p. 106).]
- Generally speaking, people believe things printed in textbooks to be truth, neutral and objective. Kozol references this issue in LTYT (in talking about outdated and culturally irrelevant textbooks) and Goldstein (2014) offers the following: A 1950 union study of city textbooks found that in general, they ignored slave revolts, declared that most slave owners had treated their human chattel kindly, treated emancipation as a privilege for which blacks were unprepared, and depicted Reconstruction not as a time of expanded opportunity for freedmen and women, but as a period of political chaps that practically justified the rise of the Klu Klux Klan and Jim Crow politics (p. 102). Revising history to fit the narrative of the powerful is not uncommon but can be very dangerous. Can you think of any examples where youve seen this type of issue in your own education? What are the dangers of this re-visioning of history (or other curricula)?
- Lastly, do you think a teachers personal life, independent of their job performance, should dictate whether or not they can be employed as a teacher? Why or why not?
Be detailed in your analysis and provide references/quotes to support your analysis. You can reference the book Teacher Wars, or any further readings. You can also include outside resources in your answers. Either way, there must be direct evidence of your reference in each of your answers. Remember to reference the texts and other sources as appropriate. Anytime you use any words/ideas that didnt come directly and solely from your head, you should provide the reference. You only need to provide a full citation, however, for sources other than those assigned.
Your discussion will also include a personal summary of the discussion lesson content. Your summary should be between 1-2 paragraphs in length.
