Gilgamesh Paper

As you finish Gilgamesh for Sunday’s class, take a moment this weekend to consider what aspect of the text interests you.

For example, are you interested in Gilgamesh as a specific type of "hero"? Are you interested in the complexities of Gilgamesh and Enkidu’s relationship? Are you interested in Gilgamesh and Enkidu’s attitudes toward the text’s female characters? Or are you more interested in the female characters themselves? Are you interested in the reasons why Gilgamesh seeks immortality, and what the text indicates about this quest? Or are you more interested in the structure of the narrative itself (that is, how the epic is organized, and how its organization contributes to your interpretation of it)? These are only a few of the topics to consider when writing about Gilgamesh

In class on Sunday, I’ll have you ask you to ask yourselves a series of questions about your general topic. From there, you can develop a thesis (again, a statement that you have argue in order to prove) about the text.

We will conduct a guided close reading of the second half of the epic, after which you will be conducting several exercises designed to help you generate ideas and material for use in Paper 1, which will be about Gilgamesh. (As per the syllabus, Paper 1 will be due to the "Discussions" section of BB before midnight on March 3rd. We will discuss further guidelines for Paper 1 in class.) Unlike with your writing assignment on The Tale of Sinuhe, with Paper 1, I will not give you a specific prompt to respond to. Instead, your topic – and your thesis – will be up to you.
