After you choose your article, you are strongly encouraged to prewrite about all seven analysis criteria and then choose anywhere from 2-4 of them for your body paragraphs:
- Topic
- Occasion
- Audience
- Speaker
- Tone
- Diction
- Biased or Missing Information
- Use of Logos, Ethos, and/or Pathos
Structure
The paper will have the following elements:
1) A title that is not the title of your article.
2) An introduction that has
- A creative hook.
- An introduction to the article with author name and “Article Title.”
- A statement of the article’s claim.
- A thesis statement that evaluates the article. (Is it well written or not?) The thesis will NOT address whether or not you agree with the article. That is irrelevant to this assignment.
3) Body paragraphs (2-4)
- Each will address one of the criteria from the seven we have discussed.
- Each will have a clear topic sentence and a clear concluding sentence. Avoid “First, Then, Next” framing. Use more sophisticated transitions, as discussed in the lecture.
- Each will use multiple quotes from the article, cited correctly in MLA.
- Each will discuss not the content of the article but rather how the quotes you choose illustrate the point of the paragraph.
4) A conclusion that
- Sums up the main point of the paper without repeating the thesis
- Ends on a broader note that is not a cliche or other formulaic ending.
Language
Try to stay in third person, meaning you won’t say things like “I think that…” or “You can see that…” See the sample paper for how this might look.
Formatting and Mechanics
For format, use MLA style, as explained in the lectures.
Make sure that you proofread your paper carefully before turning it in.
Length
The rough draft and the final draft of this paper should be 4-5 pages long, not including the Works Cited page.
