As a health care manager, you must be able to analyze financial and economic issues in the health care industry. In this assignment, you will demonstrate problem-solving skills as you choose an issue and address the financial impact in your analysis.

Preparing for the Assignment:

Select 1 current financial or economic issue in the health care industry that you want to address.

Assignment Directions

Write a 700- to 1,050-word paper about the financial or economic issue you selected in which you:

Analyze the financial impact of this issue on the health care industry. Consider the following:

What are the economic trends of the health care payment system?

What are the supply and demand challenges for health care services?

Why are costs increasing in the health care system?

What regulatory issues are affecting, or will affect, the health care industry?

Recommend at least 1 strategy to address the issue.

Consider current strategies being used or presented for improving the issue.

Discuss what you believe would be the outcome of these recommendations, if implemented.

Format your references according to AP

This is an individual assignment worth 200 points (20% of the course grade). So, it is very important that you submit this assignment.

 

Select trends that impact the cost of care on a national level. A problem-solution format is best. Here are some examples:

Pharmaceutical pricing

Pay-for-Performance

The financial impact of obesity

Nursing and Physician shortages

ACOs and PCMHs

The financial impact of an aging population

Fraud, waste, and abuse

These are just examples. You can focus on whatever trend you want. But, some students get stuck on where to start. These examples should help.

 

Focus on “the money.” Be sure your trend analysis evaluates the associated costs and how those costs can be reduced. For example, if you decide to evaluate the financial impact of obesity, your main ideas should not focus on lifestyle, weight loss, and exercise. You should, instead, focus on the costs associated with those recommendations, the costs associated with the implementation of wellness programs, and the monetary benefits of reducing costs. Another example…if you decide to focus on an aging population, how many people fit the category of “aging”? How much is spent on elderly care? What can be done to reduce the costs of elderly care? Again, these are just examples. The point is you should be able to think critically about your topic(s) and present it in a way that addresses the elements of the assignment.
