This assignment involves many of the concepts that we have learned over this quarter. It integrates the ideas into a real-life context by evaluating large corporations’ legal, regulatory, and compliance risks and asking how they impact their ongoing operations.
Here are the details:
- The company for this paper is Uber.
- Your paper should be at least 1750 words but no more than 2500 words.
- Your paper needs to be written as a narrative essay, not an outline.
- Your paper must contain the following components (the grading rubric includes the grading weights of each section):
-
- A detailed introduction to the company, which discusses when the company was formed, what the company makes or produces, significant events in the company’s history, and any notable recent achievements or disasters (not to exceed 300 words for this section).
- Litigation/Lawsuits – A discussion of at least two significant lawsuits of your choosing. These must be lawsuits that the company has been involved in during the past 24 months or is currently involved. The discussion of each lawsuit should identify the parties to the litigation, the central issue being litigated in detail, and whether the lawsuit’s outcome might have a significant impact on the company in some way. (hint: use your favorite search engine to learn about recent lawsuits).
- Regulatory Issues – Your paper should discuss at least two major regulatory issues the company is dealing with now. Your discussion should identify the regulatory issues, explain what is happening and whether the situation’s resolution may significantly impact the company’s operations. As a reminder, a regulatory issue generally involves problems where a government entity is attempting to require the company to comply with some rule, law, or policy. Part 3 of your textbook deals extensively with regulatory issues in various contexts.
- An explanation of any recent challenges the company faced regarding environmental laws, discrimination, or employment laws (not to exceed 450 words).
- Conclusion – a summary and recap of your paper.
Ground rules:
- You should use your textbook (The Legal and Regulatory Environment of Business
Marisa Anne Pagnattaro), course material, company resources, and internet resources as appropriate. However, if you use outside resources and internet materials to include paraphrasing, you must provide proper citations. - This is an individual project, not group work.
- It can sometimes be hard to tell whether something is in litigation or an open regulatory issue. Use your best judgment and defend whatever decision you ultimately make in how you classify each case.
- This paper is not an opinion paper – it is a position paper where you discuss the questions and issues presented above.
- This paper is meant to be your analysis and discussion, backed up by using vetted resources to support your point and explain your findings. If you copy/paste large quantities of information into your paper, even with citations, you will not receive full points for the submission.
