European Immigration

Europe is presently experiencing large-scale immigration from all corners of the globe.  Many of these immigrants come from very different cultures, and thus are quite out of place among traditional, homogeneous European societies.  Not surprisingly, many immigrants face discrimination, and many Europeans feel threatened that their culture will be "diluted" or "eliminated" if too many outsiders come in.

A good way to understand this is to read the articles below about the ban on Muslim headscarves in France:

Note that  in France had a  with women wearing headscarves until the Muslim women showed up:

Here are a few other examples of events that reflect these tensions:

1)  Over the last few years over one million Middle Eastern refugees have fled to Europe due to civil unrest in their own countries.  Although helping these people is very important, it is unrealistic for Europe to accommodate such large numbers without major sacrifices by the European people.

2)  In recent years France has experienced a number of attacks by Islamic terrorists. These have included horrific murders, and even a man that drove a large truck through a public festival. How do acts like this affect public perceptions of peaceful Islamic immigration?

3) In recent years Germany has seen a resurgence of anti-immigrant organizations, some of which are comprised of radical White supremacists.  This is especially disturbing given Germany’s recent past. Similar anti-immigrant groups are growing in most European nations.

We as Americans tend to celebrate multiculturalism, and we appreciate the contribution of outsiders.  This is not necessarily the case among Europeans.  Thus, we need to discuss how Europe can accommodate these changes in a way that is peaceful and beneficial to all.

1. How can Europe accommodate immigrants in a way that does not create discomfort among the traditional society?

2. Should Europeans be expected to adjust to the cultures of the immigrants?  Should immigrants be expected to abandon their culture and traditions and adapt to Europe’s?

It is too easy to simply say "each side should compromise."  As we can see by the events above, this involves major cultural shifts.  What can be done?  What should be done?
