1) While few know for sure which party will be elected president in the 2024 elections, it can be said that Democratic nominee will either win the election or lose to the Republican nominee, preserving the two party system in the United States. Why are there only two viable political parties? How are these parties different from each other? Or conversely, if you believe that neither party is all that different from one another, explain why you believe this. Be sure to include a discussion on third parties and the struggles they face in American politics.
2) What is one policy issue that you care strongly about in the United States? Explain how and why this policy issue is of importance to you. What is one interest group that seeks to influence governmental decisions in favor of this policy issue? In what way(s) do you believe this particular interest group is most successful in their efforts to attain this favorable outcome? Explain and in doing so, be sure to demonstrate your knowledge of the pluralist and elitist perspectives on interest group behavior.
3) Experts in voting behavior often bring up the so-called “participation paradox” where the perceived costs and inconveniences associated with voting outweighs whatever benefits of voting. Describe your take concerning this paradox. How would you respond to an eligible voter who informs you that they will not be voting in the upcoming election. Explain and doing so, be sure to demonstrate knowledge of the factors that increase voter turnout as well as the factors that decrease voter turnout.
4) Imagine that you are conducting a representative public opinion survey on the opinions of registered voters? What steps would you need to take to insure that this survey accurately represents the targeted population? In your answer, be sure to discuss the problems associated with straw polls and mail surveys as evidenced by the faulty Literary Digest survey conducted in 1936 which predicted President Franklin D. Roosevelt would lose in that year’s presidential election.
