"When it comes to medical research papers, the selection of appropriate statistical methods is pivotal to ensure the quality of papers and the credibility of their results. One of the most used statistical methods in medical research papers is a t-test. A t-test is a tool for evaluating the means of one or two populations using hypothesis testing. A t-test may be used to evaluate whether a single group differs from a known value (a one-sample t-test), whether two groups differ from each other (an independent two-sample t-test), or whether there is a significant difference in paired measurements (a paired, or dependent samples t-test) (Liang et al., 2019).

My project will be looking at decreasing the noise levels in the operating room during procedural timeouts and wound closure. The project will start out with observing cases and measuring the decibel levels during timeouts and closure to see what the baseline is. Then I will come up with a phrase or word that will mean to instantly stop all talking or movement during the timeout and closure and measure the decibel levels post intervention. The t-test question will revolve around whether the intervention decreases noise levels in the operating room during procedural timeouts and wound closure. The International Noise Council has stipulated that the noise level in hospitals should not exceed 45dB during the day. If there is no action in the operating room, the background noise is about 13dB. During surgery the noise level may exceed 100dB. This much noise can affect patient care and disrupt the concentration during surgery (Giv et al., 2017). The type of t-test I would be using would be a two-sample t-test, because I am comparing the two groups to see whether the noise levels are the same pre and post intervention. Noise pollution can be a major problem in the operating room. Not only does it disrupt concentration, but it can also reduce the hearing level of staff and increase the possibility of errors in the conversations between the surgeon and staff. The timeout is the last chance to catch any errors such as wrong side surgery. If the staff can’t hear the timeout and don’t pay attention the patient can potentially be harmed. Also, if staff can’t hear during closing counts, an item can be left inside the patient and cause harm. These are just a few reasons why this project is very important to the safety of our patients.
