Students will attend a Christian worship service at a church or parish that is a different culture from their own culture. Culture is a shared legacy, a collection of common experiences. These experiences include language, songs, literature, faith, and events among other things. This assignment attends for you to go to a Church, a Christian worship service. Do not do attend another religions worship service for this assignment. (LO2)
Find a church where a different language is spoken, preached, or sung. Find a church where the majority of the members are from a country other than your native country. You will need to plan ahead to complete this assignment and attend the worship service.
After attending the worship service, students will write a 2-3 page paper discussing the following:
a. Identify Cultural Differences: Students will identify the name of the church and when they visited. Students will identify specific cultural differences between the students culture and the culture of the service the student attended.
b. Explain Differences: Students will explain which differences they appreciated and why they would be willing to see these specific differences incorporated in their own church or parish.
c. Respectful Analysis: Students will respectfully analyze which differences made them feel uncomfortable and address why these differences made them feel uncomfortable.
d. Benefits: Students will explain ways in which cultural diversity can benefit individual churches and Christian organizations. Appeals to Scripture and Church History are highly encouraged.
Students should label each topic clearly. Students should refer to the rubric at the end of this assignment for additional details on how each topic will be graded. This is a TFC initiated project to build awareness, appreciation, and experience in diverse settings.
