We saw in chapter 3 that many household items we use each day contain ionic compounds. Now, let’s look for molecular (covalent) compounds that may be in the items we use.
In your initial post for this discussion: Please select one household item and identify one covalent (molecular) compound that item contains. Pick a unique compound for your post – one that has not already been selected by another student.
For the covalent (molecular) compound selected:
- identify the household item which contains this compound
- report the name of this compound as it appears on the label of the item
- reports the chemical formula of this compound
- show the structure of this compound. (You may draw the structure of the molecule on a piece of paper and include that as an attachment OR include a link to a webpage that shows the structure of the compound.)
- Why is this compound included in the household item? Please give a brief explanation.
Reply posts: Please reply to at least one other student. In your reply, address the following:
- Is this household item you use?
- Identify one thing you learned about the ionic compound after reading the comments posted in the discussion.
Be sure to properly reference all sources used. APA, MLA, Chicago, or ACS citation styles are acceptable.
