https://www.ted.com/topics/depression
Compose an analysis of two TED talks about similar topics, inwhich you identify each speakers message and analyze how effectively each is gettingtheir message across, via the persuasive methods used, phrasing, tone, rhetorical appeals, sounds, images, relevant context, timing, etc. Youll wantto also situate the text in its relevant context, thinking about when it wasmade, what it might be responding to, and its relevance for todays world. Yourgoal by the end of the essay should be to argue which of these two TED Talksyou think is most effective at getting its message across and to explain why usingspecific evidence from each.
This does not mean agreeing with one over the other,or arguing for or against what either is saying. Instead, you should look at howeach makes its case, and then conclude which uses more effective techniques forits purpose and audience. For instance, say you are analyzing a TED Talk about electriccars. You personally can think that electric cars are not a viable solution, but in analyzing the TED Talk, you might focus on the speakers effectivepassionate delivery, use of solid sources and facts to back up his or herclaims, and the expertise he or she brings to the table. Notice, none of thesethings are agreeing or disagreeing, but instead are focused on the methods thespeaker uses.
In order to accomplishthis, you should consider the choices the speakers of the talks made: what ison the screen at any given moment, and how does that help get the messageacross? How does the speaker present themself? Why is the tone or style of the presentationappropriate (or inappropriate) for its particular message? How does it fit withinthe expectations of what a TED Talk isdoes it follow the rules andexpectations? What are the most impactful parts and why? How does the audience reactor how is the target viewer likely to react? These are just some ideas of howyou might begin thinking about this assignment.
