Directions: Students may present alone or select a partner or work with a group (3 max.) and research a role of a nurse serving the community. Some examples include school nurses, forensic nurses, occupational health nurses, public health nurses, hospice nurses, and prison nurses. To sign up for a topic, select the People tab- RN role in the menu to the left side.
Develop a 10-15 slide presentation using PowerPoint(or similar software) which must be viewed in your videotaped or YouTube presentation. (Remember the audience should be able to view the presenter and the power point presentation as they would in a classroom setting). Presentation should be approximately 10 minutes in length and if presenting with another student or group, each person should divide the time equally. In order to prevent duplication of topic students must contact instructor with the community nurse role selected, or sign up in the group section for available group slots. Be sure to include reference citations on slides when needed, and a reference page structured in current APA format. Answer the following questions in your presentation:
- What are the primary activities performed by the nurse, and what is the scope of practice?
- What are the necessary skills and abilities required for this role?
- What educational preparation is required to function in the role?
- What other disciplines or professionals does the nurse interact with in the role?
- What teaching/learning strategies can be applied to addressing specific issues related to the core population?
- What was unique or interesting that you learned about this nursing role in your research?
Listed below is helpful information regarding the Community Nursing Presentation.
1. Each student in the group should present for the same amount of time.
2. Avoid reading the monitor, screen or notes. Use notes only as a guide. Reading word-for-word is unacceptable and points will be deducted.
3. Dress appropriately (business casual or lab coat).
4. The presentation needs to be videotaped (showing you presenting and PowerPoint easily visible). It can be submitted directly or as a link. Also upload your PowerPoint. Video will also need to be posted for comments in the last “Discussion Question.” If doing this is in a small group, only one student needs to submit the video link and slides, but make sure all group members are listed on the first slide.
For your videotape presentation you should use Studio within Canvas, in the navigation bar on the left hand side. When you open Studio you can record within that area, save, then upload it to the assignment. Remember the Canvas Help team is very helpful and can guide you (by using the question mark at the bottom of navigation bar). This should be a good and easy option. However, if you are in a group, all members need to be together at the same time, as there are no editing sections to add other presenters.
You can record power point slides (with webcam and audio). This is not available on Apple computers. You can also do a video recording (as long as slides are able to be read in the recording and presenter is visible). Screencast-o-matic.com is another helpful tool for recording and can be used by presenters in different locations (but the paid version may be needed for that.) Either method of recording should be submitted into Studio or YouTube and submit the link. There are other recording options.
